There are 6 common basement waterproofing methods. Three of them move water. Two of them block water. One of them only manages damp air. Most wet basements in Akron need 2 or 3 of the 6, and almost nobody needs all of them.
The trouble is that every contractor sells the method they own equipment for. So this page lays out all 6 side by side, with what each one fixes and what it does not.

1. Interior drainage system
This is the most common fix in Akron and the one most homes here need. A channel is cut around the inside edge of the floor. Slotted pipe goes in, packed in clean stone, and runs to a sump pump .
It does not try to stop the water. It gives the water an easier route than through your floor. That matters because you cannot block hydrostatic pressure (opens in a new tab) with a coating. You can only relieve it.
Best for: water at the floor line, a damp slab, or a sump that runs on dry days. Not for: a wall that has moved or bowed inward.
2. Exterior waterproofing
The ground outside gets dug down to the footing. The wall is cleaned and patched, then a waterproofing membrane and a dimpled drain board go on. A new footing drain is bedded in stone and run to daylight or a sump.
This is the only method that treats the wall from the water side. It is also the most disruptive and the most expensive. The full interior versus exterior comparison covers when the cost is worth it.
Best for: a failing wall, or a collapsed original clay tile drain. Not for: February. The ground is frozen.
3. Crack injection
Resin is pushed through the full thickness of the wall to fill a crack end to end. Polyurethane for a crack that is leaking now. Structural epoxy (opens in a new tab) for one that still carries weight.
It is the cheapest real repair in this trade. It is also the one people skip, because a thin crack looks harmless until the ninth winter.
Best for: water arriving at one point on a poured wall. Not for: water arriving along the whole floor line. That is pressure, not a crack, and telling the two apart decides your whole budget.
4. Sump pump and battery backup
The drainage system collects water. The pump is what removes it. In Akron a backup battery is not optional, because the storms that flood basements are the same storms that cut the power.
Best for: every interior system. There is no interior drainage without a pump. Not for: a basement with no drainage. A pump alone just sits in a hole.
5. Vapor barrier and dehumidifier
Half of a damp basement problem is air, not puddles. Bare dirt in a crawl space gives off water all day. A 20-mil liner seals the ground and a dehumidifier holds the air under 55% damp.
Best for: musty smell, mold on joists, cold floors above a crawl space. Not for: standing water. Seal that only after the water is handled.
6. Grading and downspouts
The cheapest method and the most skipped. Ground that slopes back at the house, and downspouts dumping roof water at the wall, will beat any system you install inside.

Which method does your basement need?
Work through it in this order:
- Fix the outside first. Ground slope and downspouts, every time.
- Is the wall sound? If it bows or has a sideways crack, it needs holding before anything else.
- Where does the water arrive? One spot means injection. The whole floor line means drainage.
- Is the air still damp after the water stops? Then you need the barrier and the dehumidifier.
- Building new? The rules change completely, and waterproofing during new construction is far cheaper than retrofitting later.
